Letter from CR Hoopingarner

We have had a busy summer working with the Alumni Foundation Board of directors to initiate a strategic review and begin the process of helping promote our profession and alma mater. We have “White Coated” the new freshman class, the last year at the current location. We are working with the CE department to help stage an educational event at the new building in the fall of 2012. It will be in the new Cooley Conference Center and will feature Dr. Ron Goldstein and others. Dr. Herb Wade is chairing a committee to review our current bylaws and Dr. Rita Cammarata is chairing a strategic planning commit- tee. Dr. Jerry Katz is updating our awards criteria and Dr. Dwight Peccora is busy with membership projects. Your association moves forward only because you provide volunteer support and encouragement.

People often ask, “ What is the benefit of being a member.” Besides being a force in mold- ing young dentists and establishing UTSD as the premier school in the world I have another benefit for you that is available to you as a dues paying or life member. This year we are holding the UTSD Alumni Round-Up in conjunction with the Winston Lecture given by alumnus Dr. Jimmy Eubank at the school. As a member of the Alumni Associa- tion your course fee has been waived. The lecture will be at the school and begins with registration and a continental breakfast at 8:00am-9:00am, Friday, September 23rd. We will then meet for lunch (on our own) at Treviso’s (next to the dental school). After that, we have arranged a tour of the new building. Operatories are going in and is really taking shape. I know it will excite you and bring back many memories. We do need to be regis- tered for this event and need a count as quickly as possible. Please contact Tricia Fullerton at utdbaa@comcast.net, 713.840.1328 or go online at utdbalumniassoc.org to register online.

I have also attached a letter from Dean Valenza that details how the current financial condition of the State of Texas has impacted the medical center and the school. There is also a section on which legislators proposed what projects and how they were voted. What were of great interest to me were the projects that seemed like total “Pork Barrel” that were proposed and rejected by many of the legislators I thought knew better. It made very interesting reading.

Hope to see you at UTSD Alumni Round-Up, Sincerely,

CR Hoopingarner, Class of ‘73 President UTSD Alumni Association
